Africa as a continent is blessed with so much unexplored beauty. The best of which can be found in the capital cities of countries it is made up of. The capital cities are usually the “headquarters” of the nation in which they are domiciled.

  1. Kampala, Uganda

Kampala is the capital of Uganda and is located over the Northern shore of Lake Victoria. It has been ranked by Mercer as the most live-able city in East Africa. Kampala is built on seven hills namely; Old Kampala Hill, Mengo Hill, Kibuli Hill, Namirembe Hill, Lubaga Hill, Nsambya Hill, Nakasero Hill. It is also home to five swamps, namely, Kinawataka swamp, Nakivubo swamp, Lubigi swamp, Kansanga swamp, Kyetinda swamp.

 

2. Cairo, Egypt

Cairo in Egypt was founded by Fatimid rulers in 969. Today is the 15th largest city in the world. It is home to the River Nile, Pyramids of Giza and loads of Islamic and Coptic Christian architecture. With a population of about 20 million people, it is also home to the Tahir Square and is associated with the ancient city of Memphis.

Kigali has been described as the most inviting city in Africa. It is the capital and largest city in Africa. 4. Gaborone, Botswana

Gaborone is the economic capital as well as the government capital of Botswana. The country which is not a developing country has been described as an upper middle income country, especially for its rich diamond resource. It is also home to the Gaborone game reserve, and the Mokolodi Nature Reserve. All these serve as an additional source of income for the country through Tourism.

 

5. Maputo, Mozambique

Not many people outside of East Africa know about Maputo. At first, when you tell a Nigerian or Ghanaian that you are travelling to Maputo, their first reaction is to ask where it is. However, Maputo is the bustling capital of Mozambique and is home to an Indian Ocean port and located in the far south of Mozambique. It was known as Lourenço Marques until 1976. It is also known for a lot of colonial architecture which remains till today. Today, Maputo is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Africa.

 

6. Nairobi, Kenya

You cannot be thinking of a safari and not think of Nairobi. Founded in 1899, Nairobi is home to the Nairobi National Park, which is a large game reserve for black rhinos, giraffes, zebras and lions, which are all endangered game. It is the 10th largest city in Africa and is also home to the Karen Blixen Museum, and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which is an elephant orphanage. Total wealth held in the Kenyan capital amounts to USD 49 Bn. The city is known to be the economic hub of the East African region.

 

7. Cape Town, South Africa

This city is the legislative capital of South Africa and is home to tourist attractions like Table mountain and Cape point. In the past Cape Town has been known to face drought and now, the city is big on water conservation. Apart from that, it is one of the most beautiful capital cities in Africa and is just a boat ride away from Robben Island, Nelson Mandela, prison grounds.
