After a long time, the desire to visit this outstanding tourist site called Olumo Rock became a reality. Olumo Rock is one of the most popular tourist sites in Nigeria. It is usually visited by people from different parts of the world. It is situated in the ancient city of Abeokuta in Ogun state. It also sits in the domain of the Yoruba land, one of the major ethnic groups in Nigeria. Abeokuta was originally inhabited by the Egba people who sought refuge at Olumo Rock in times of inter-tribal wars in the 19th century. At the entrance of the site, a gate fee is usually paid per person, the fee depends on whether you want to do normal climbing or use the elevator. It is however a worthy experience.
Some people have described Olumo Rock as having a rich history and great spiritual significance. The rock is composed of granite rocks and has been sitting there for thousands of years. According to history, the rock once was fortress and sactuary for the people in the 19th century, especially in times of war. The Olumo Rock is said to be 137 metres tall. At this height, it will be easy to see the whole of the city of Abeokuta( Abeokuta means under the rock). following infrastrutural development at this site, the site now houses a museum, restaurants, water fountain among others.
Because of the spiritual significance of this rock to the local inhabitants, the Egba people, sacrifices are usually offered in the shrine by their ruler on their behalf and prays for the whole country, the entire Egba people and for the tourists that visit the site as well.
